[How to wear a two-part type kimono]

Here are the accessories that come with the formal kimono.

  1. First wear the kimono slip then wear the nagajyuban over the slip.
  2. I Insert the collar stay into the nagajyuban.
  3. The collar stay must go on the underside of the nagajyuban.
  4. Now wear the nagajyuban.
  5. Fix the collar. Make sure that the right front piece goes under the left front piece.
  6. Pull the koshi-himo sash to the back, wind them around your chest and tie them together at your chest.
  7. Wrap the date-jime around your waist and tie them together so your nagajyuban won't come loose.
  8. Fold the back collar of the kimono in half at the center. Wear the kimono over the nagajyuban.
  9. Use a clip to temporary tack the collar of the nagajyuban to the collar of the kimono.
  10. Adjust the front pieces to the length of the wearer. Make sure that the right front piece goes under the left front piece. The bottom edge should not to go lower than your ankles.
  11. Wind the koshi-himo around your waist and tie them together at your belly.
  12. Insert your hands through the miyatsukuchi holes (openings on the under sleeve) and pull the front pieces and the back piece to adjust their length.
  13. Hold the collar from the back and adjust the front collars.
  14. Make sure that the white collars shows approximately 1.5 to 2 cm at the front.
  15. Wind the string around your chest, just under the bust, and tie it at your chest.
  16. Pass your hands through the miyatsukuchi holes and pull the back piece to make sure all rucks on the back disappear.
  17. Fix the front pieces. Wind the datejime tie around your waist and tie it at your belly.
  18. Now wear the fukuro-obi. First, fold the obi into half lengthwise starting from the tesaki (front end) toward to the tare tesaki (back end.)
    * Do not fold the obi all the way but only to the length that you need to wind it around your body twice.
  19. Place the obi on your belly and wrap it around your waist twice.
